Living Room Furniture

The living room sets the tone for how a home feels, and our living room furniture range covers sofas, armchairs, coffee tables, sideboards, media units and occasional pieces unified by Heal's editorial eye. Solid timber, upholstery in natural fibres and quality metalwork feature across designer collaborations and heritage classics. Every piece is chosen for how it lives, not how it photographs.

Start with the sofa, as it anchors the room's scale and sets the palette, then build around it with occasional chairs, a coffee table and storage. Leave lighting and accessories until the bigger pieces are in place. This sequence avoids the common mistake of over-committing to accent pieces before the core is resolved.

A four-seater sofa plus one or two armchairs covers most living rooms, providing comfortable capacity for a household plus two to four guests without crowding. Additional ottomans or stools offer flexible extra perches. The room feels balanced when seating faces itself for conversation rather than lining walls.

Mixing two or three compatible timber tones reads more collected and less matched-set. Keep one timber dominant (on the larger pieces) and use others as accents on smaller occasional furniture. Radical contrasts between very light and very dark woods work best when the two are deliberately separated by tone-bridging elements.

Start with the largest piece against its strongest position (usually the longest wall or opposite a focal point like a fireplace), then work the supporting pieces around it. Leave at least 45cm between seating and the coffee table for leg room. Avoid pushing all furniture against walls in medium or large rooms; bring pieces inwards to create intimacy.
