    Aim for a coffee table around two-thirds the length of the sofa – a 200cm sofa pairs well with a 130-140cm coffee table. Width should leave 40-45cm of clear floor between the sofa edge and the table for leg room. Heights between 38cm and 46cm work for most sofa seat heights.

    Both ends, where the sofa allows. Each end of a sofa wants somewhere to put a glass and a lamp; missing one creates an asymmetry that's hard to ignore. The exception is a sofa with one armless end deliberately placed against a wall – there, a single side table works at the open end.

    Tonally yes; identically no. A matched set of three reads as showroom; pieces that share a material or finish but vary in form read as collected. A common pairing is a marble coffee table with timber side tables in the same warm tone, or a timber coffee with steel side tables sharing the same finish family.

    In smaller living rooms, yes – the smaller table tucks under the larger one when not needed and pulls out when there's company or when an armchair needs its own surface. In larger rooms, nesting tables can read as fussy compared to a single substantial coffee table. The format suits compact spaces better than generous ones.
