    Opal and smoked glass work best over kitchen islands because they diffuse the bulb rather than casting glare onto work surfaces. A cluster of three smaller pendants in a line often works better than a single large fitting, especially over longer islands.

    Clear glass lets the filament bulb become the focal point, better in dining rooms where the light is ambient rather than task-focused. Opal diffuses the light evenly across the room and suits kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere glare could become tiring.

    Over a dining table or island, the bottom of the pendant should sit roughly 75-90cm above the surface, high enough to clear sightlines, low enough to anchor the space. In a stairwell or double-height room, chain or flex length can be doubled without losing proportion.

    A single coloured-glass pendant works as an accent against a neutral scheme; a matched set of three reads more cohesively. The richer colours, smoke, amber, green, sit more easily with timber and brass than the brighter tones, which can feel more graphic.
