    A floor lamp works best beside a sofa arm or behind an armchair, where the light falls onto a reading zone without glaring across the room. A second lamp in an opposite corner balances the lighting across the whole space, and a third in a reading nook or by a desk gives task light where overhead lighting rarely reaches.

    A task floor lamp uses a directional shade or an adjustable arm to focus light onto a specific spot, usually a reading position. An ambient floor lamp uses a diffused or upward-facing shade to wash light more generally across a room. Most living rooms benefit from both: a task lamp beside the main reading chair and an ambient lamp in an opposite corner.

    Task floor lamps want 450 to 800 lumens at the bulb, roughly equivalent to a 40 to 60W incandescent, focused by the shade onto a book or work surface. Ambient floor lamps can go lower, around 300 to 500 lumens, with dimmability for evening moods. Check the shade's maximum wattage to avoid over-specifying and damaging the fitting.

    Floor lamps suit small rooms well because their footprint is tiny, a 25 to 40cm base, while the light they cast covers a wide area. A slim tripod or arched lamp in a corner frees up table surface for books and drinks, and adds a vertical line that draws the eye up rather than emphasising the room's limits.
