    Lucian Ercolani founded ercol in 1920 and developed the steam-bending techniques the brand still uses today. The proportions of his designs – particularly the coffee tables and chairs from the 1950s Originals range – have aged remarkably well, which is why they continue to appear in homes and showrooms a century later.

    Yes. The headquarters and main production facility remain in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, where the brand has been based since 1920. Some component sourcing is European, but the steam-bending and finishing work happens in the UK workshop.

    The Originals nest of tables (typically 70cm and 60cm wide) tucks neatly under each other when not needed and pulls out to seat extra coffee, drinks or books. The Pebble round table at 70cm diameter is the other compact option and reads as visually lighter than a rectangular piece in a tight space.

    Most ercol coffee tables are oil- or wax-finished – clean with a soft, dry cloth and re-apply a light wood wax twice a year to maintain the finish. Avoid silicone polishes, which build up over time. Keep the table out of direct sunlight to prevent uneven fading on the timber surface.
