As a working rule, allow 60cm of table width per person seated, plus 15cm at each end. That gives a 150cm rectangular table for six, 180cm for eight and 210cm for ten. In practical terms, measure the room first and leave 90cm of circulation space between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture piece.

Rectangular tables maximise seating per floor area and suit long rooms, making them the everyday workhorse. Round tables foster conversation but need more floor space per seat. Oval tables split the difference, offering a softer line than rectangular without the circulation demands of a full round, and extending leaves often turn one into the other.

Dust regularly and wipe spills immediately with a soft cloth, using a slightly damp not wet cloth for stickier marks. Re-oil solid-wood tops every six to twelve months with a food-safe oil recommended by the maker, and avoid harsh cleaners or silicone-based polishes that leave residue the wood can't absorb back into.

Fully matching table and chair sets give a classical, restaurant-style look but can feel catalogue-fresh in a home. Contrasting the two, such as a pale oak table with dark walnut chairs or an upholstered-chair mix around a marble table, creates the layered feel the best-lived dining rooms have while keeping visual cohesion through proportion.
