    Dining rooms, stairwell voids and double-height hallways give a chandelier the ceiling space it needs to read as sculptural rather than crowded. Hanging over a dining table, the bottom of the fitting should sit around 75 to 90cm above the surface; over a stairwell, centre the chandelier on the landing view from below.

    A rule of thumb is to add the room's length and width in metres, and use that sum as the chandelier's diameter in inches. A 4m by 5m dining room, for instance, suits a 9-inch diameter fitting at minimum, with larger 12 to 20-inch pieces working well as a deliberate focal point rather than a subtle ambient layer.

    Contemporary chandeliers in brushed brass, smoked glass or matte black sit beautifully in modern and transitional homes, often providing the single decorative flourish in an otherwise pared-back room.
