Carafes and Decanters

Serve wine or water in style with our range of designer carafes and decanters, from hand-blown glass vessels to crystal classics with cut facets. Each piece is chosen for the way it handles on a table, balancing weight and pour so a Sunday lunch or a midweek supper gains a small note of occasion.

Young, tannic reds benefit from 30 to 60 minutes in a wide-based decanter to soften before serving. Older, delicate reds need a gentler pour, ideally through a muslin or fine sieve to catch sediment, and only a short rest before drinking. A decanter is as much about presentation at the table as chemistry.

Decanters are typically wider-based with a narrow neck, designed to maximise surface area for wine to breathe. Carafes are more upright and slim, suited to water, everyday table wines, or chilled whites where aeration isn't the point. Both carry the table beautifully, so the choice often comes down to the pour you're serving.

Fine crystal is best hand-washed in warm water with a drop of mild detergent, dried immediately with a lint-free cloth to avoid watermarks. For stubborn residue, a handful of uncooked rice swirled with warm water lifts build-up without scratching the interior, which keeps the clarity and sparkle over the years.

Store decanters unstoppered on a shelf where air can circulate through the neck, so the interior stays dry and free of trapped scent. Dedicating a small cupboard shelf to glassware, rather than standing pieces on a dining sideboard permanently, also keeps dust off and the glass ready for use at short notice.
