Modern Bowls

Our modern bowls cross the line between serving piece and sculptural object, from wide ceramic fruit bowls to small hand-thrown dipping dishes and weighted wooden salad bowls. Each is chosen for the balance of function and finish, so the bowl holds its place at the centre of a table whether full or empty.

A 25 to 30cm diameter fruit bowl comfortably holds a week's fresh fruit for a family of four, providing enough depth to stack apples and oranges without them rolling off. Smaller 20cm bowls suit singles or couples, while oversized 35cm display bowls work best on dining tables as centrepieces rather than kitchen worktops.

Ceramic bowls offer the widest range of styles and are dishwasher- and microwave-safe. Wooden bowls add warmth and weight, particularly for salads, though they need hand-washing and occasional re-oiling. Glass bowls read lightly on the table and suit fresh foods where you want the colours of what's inside to do the work.

Most ceramic and stoneware bowls handle a standard dishwasher cycle without issue, while hand-painted pieces, ones with metallic glaze details, or wooden bowls should be hand-washed to preserve the finish. The product page marks each piece's care requirements, which are usually visible on a stamp or sticker on the base.

A shallow decorative bowl reads as a still-life on a coffee table, filled with objects that have pattern and weight: polished stones, dried citrus, small ceramics or a single sculptural branch. Keep the bowl lower than any adjacent lamp or candle holder so it reads as the tray-level piece rather than competing for attention.
