Bedside Lamps

A good bedside lamp does three jobs at once, providing focused task light for reading, softer ambient light for settling and a considered visual object on the bedside surface. Our bedside lamp range spans fabric and paper shaded classics, ceramic-base studio designs, metal reading spots and minimalist glass forms. Every lamp is compatible with standard UK dimming circuits.

A bedside lamp should sit roughly 60 to 75cm above the mattress when you're upright in bed, which usually means a 40 to 55cm tall lamp on a standard bedside table. Taller tables allow shorter lamps; shorter tables suit taller lamps. The shade should sit between eye and shoulder level when reading.

For reading, aim for roughly 400 to 600 lumens of light output directed onto the page, which translates to a 6 to 9W LED equivalent in most standard bulbs. Dimming to lower levels for ambient use is preferable to a low-output bulb that can't brighten for reading. Warm white (2700K) is easiest on the eyes.

Matched lamps create symmetry and feel more considered in most bedrooms, though intentionally mixing two different but related lamps (same height, different silhouette) works in more eclectic schemes. Both lamps need similar light output to balance the reading experience. Height consistency matters more than shade style.

Touch control avoids fumbling for a switch at night and can include dimming stages, which is particularly welcome in a bedroom. Most modern touch lamps use LED-compatible circuits and run with standard bulbs. Bedside lamps with integrated USB charging points add further practical value.
