Industrial Table Lamp

An industrial table lamp brings the structural honesty of factory-floor lighting into the home, exposed armatures, heavy bases, matte metal finishes, filament bulbs. The collection covers Anglepoise originals, Flos Gino Sarfatti designs, GUBI reissues and contemporary pieces from studios working in the same engineering-led tradition, for desks, reading corners and dining tables.

    Industrial lamps read structurally, exposed arms and hinges, heavy cast bases, visible bulbs and a material palette of enamelled metal, brass and steel. The genre emerged from workshop and drafting-room lighting and has since moved into the home without losing its engineering character.

    Anglepoise (the original 1932 task lamp), Flos (Sarfatti's 548 and the Parentesi), GUBI (Grasshopper, Cobra) and Bestlite are the most-specified heritage brands. Newer makers, DCW Éditions, Lampe Gras, Normann Copenhagen, work in the same vernacular.

    The better industrial lamps, Anglepoise 1227, the Gras 201, sit as comfortably on a bedside table as a drafting desk. They anchor the room with sculptural presence and work quietly enough not to dominate. Overstyled novelty pieces rarely age as well.

    Most industrial lamps were designed around visible filament bulbs, so a clear or smoked Edison bulb in warm-white LED is the best choice visually. Opal or covered shades allow standard globe bulbs and diffuse the light more softly.

Akari Bb3-33S Floor Lamp By Isamu Noguchi for Vitra The Akari Bb3-33S Floor Lamp is part of a collection of unusual floor lamps designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951. The Akari Light Sculptures are named after the Japanese word for ‘light’ in reference to their physical lightness and illumination. The inspiration behind the collection came from paper lanterns Noguchi observed at the Japanese town of Gifu. Today, each one is crafted by hand in the Ozeki workshop, a family-run crafters based in Gifu.
