A divan or storage bed reclaims floor space by absorbing storage into the base – effectively replacing a chest of drawers with the bed itself. Low-profile bedsteads on slim legs read as visually lighter than upholstered beds, which can stop a small room feeling closed in.

A bedstead has a visible frame – timber, metal or upholstered – with a separate mattress sitting on slats or springs. A divan is a fabric-covered base built around the springs, often with built-in storage drawers. Bedsteads suit period or design-led rooms; divans suit family bedrooms and guest rooms where storage matters most.

A king (150cm wide) is the UK standard for two adults and works in most master bedrooms. A super king (180cm) is meaningfully more comfortable for couples who move at night or share with children, but needs a bedroom of at least 3.5m wide to leave proper walking space around the bed. Measure before deciding.

A solid hardwood or proper steel-framed bed should last 25 years or more. Upholstered beds depend on the fabric – linens and heavy weaves wear well; thin velvets show every mark. Storage beds with hydraulic lifts have one mechanical part that may need servicing after a decade. Cheap pine frames typically last 5-10 years before joints loosen.
