    Bath salts draw on mineral content to soothe tired muscles and soften the water, with Epsom or Dead Sea salts giving genuine therapeutic benefit beyond fragrance. Bath oils float on the water surface, coating the skin as you step out, and suit dry skin types. Many households keep both for different nights and moods.

    The step up from supermarket to considered bath products lies in ingredient quality, fragrance complexity and the absence of harsh surfactants that strip the skin. The difference is especially noticeable on drier skin in winter, when a thoughtful body oil or hand-poured salt soak earns its price across a single good bath.

    Start with the room: dim the lights or light a single candle, remove the phone, and run the bath slightly cooler than shower-hot so the body relaxes rather than shocks. Add salts or oils while the water is running so they disperse fully. Plan for 20 to 30 minutes and pair with a body scrub or slow-pressed oil afterwards for the full effect.

    Several bath oils double as shower oils, particularly those formulated to emulsify with water rather than bead on the skin surface. Body scrubs work well in the shower, as do shower steamers that release a fragrant vapour from the floor. On the 14th June every year, bath lovers across the world come together to celebrate International Bath Day. Originally, International Bath Day was created to celebrate the Greek Scientist and Mathematician Archimedes. It’s said that the day marks the anniversary of Archimedes’ discovery that an object’s volume can be determined by immersing it in water.
