Agnes

The Agnes range by Kay & Stemmer is a quiet, considered collection of British-made furniture, sitting at home in both contemporary and classic interiors. Drawing on the craftsmanship of Scandinavian solid-wood traditions, Agnes is produced in the UK by SCP – a study in unfussy proportions, exposed joinery and timber that ages beautifully.

Agnes is the work of Kay & Stemmer, the husband-and-wife studio of Reiko Kaneko and Charles Stemmer. The pieces are produced in the UK by SCP, an East London manufacturer with a long history of working with British and international design talent.

The range works in solid hardwoods – primarily oak and walnut – with traditional joinery left visible as part of the design. Surfaces are hand-finished with oil rather than lacquer, which lets the grain show through and allows the timber to develop a patina over years of use.

The collection is broad enough to work across most of the home: bedside tables, chests of drawers and dressing tables for the bedroom; sideboards, coffee tables and dining tables for living and dining rooms. The shared design language ties the pieces together across rooms without making the home feel themed.

It is. Solid timber and oil-finished surfaces handle daily life better than veneered or lacquered alternatives, and small marks can usually be sanded out and re-oiled rather than needing professional restoration. The construction is robust and the joinery is built to be re-glued or repaired generations down the line.
