a·emotional light is a Barcelona-based lighting studio working primarily in hand-shaped ceramic, with pieces that read as quiet sculptures before they read as lamps. Every fitting is finished by hand, with the studio's signature glazes and an emphasis on the warmth and shadow cast by the light source.

    The studio treats each lamp as a ceramic sculpture first, shaping and glazing every piece by hand in Barcelona. The forms are deliberately calm, rounded volumes, soft edges, so the light itself becomes the detail rather than the fitting.

    The studio uses reactive stoneware glazes fired at high temperature, which gives the surfaces their depth of colour and subtle variation. Metal fittings are brass or matt black, chosen to recede rather than compete with the ceramic body.

    The softer light and sculptural presence work especially well in bedrooms, reading corners and hallway consoles. A single piece lit on a sideboard can transform the mood of a room more quietly than a larger, more technical fitting.

    The stoneware is robust and fully vitrified, so everyday use is fine; the usual care advice is to dust with a soft dry cloth and avoid sharp knocks. The fired surface is resistant to marking from fingerprints or light handling.

      Last year, photographer Mark Cornick visited our flagship store on Tottenham Court Road to take some striking photos of Heal's very own architectural gem--the Cecil Brewer staircase. Not long after his visit, the staircase was closed to the public while it underwent a facelift. Finally revealed during London Design Festival, the spiralling stairwell has been stripped back to its classic structure, polished, varnished and finished with a brand new centrepiece- a 64 arm Bocci chandelier. The hand-blown glass globes of this sculptural piece appear to drift gradually downwards between floor, lending the space a dreamy atmosphere.       When one thinks of Milan, one is thinking about the latest looks and hottest trends. No stranger to spectacle, a glitzy Tom Dixon launch is a familiar sight at the Salone Del Mobile Milano. This year the London-based designer brings his Multiplex show to the cities Cinema and Galleria on via Manzoni, where, alongside a host of bars and eateries, he unveiled a number of pieces from his new lighting collection. Exclusively available at Heal’s for two weeks, the Cut range is described as “an exercise in optics” and consists of a diamond cut long and small faceted pendant and wall light. Coated in a space-age mirror finish, each piece transforms once light passes through its walls to reveal kaleidoscopic reflections that have been created using an innovative vacuum metallised process. Alongside this new range, Tom Dixon also introduces the Melt Surface light (pictured at the top of the page) an extension of his best-selling Melt series. For its latest collection, British lighting specialist Anglepoise celebrates the fascinating materiality of china porcelain with the new three-piece Original 1227 Mini Ceramic range, available exclusively at Heal’s flagship store and online for the next six weeks. Adding a whole new dimension to the iconic silhouette of the shade, first designed for the brand in the 1930s, once switched on each light changes from gloss white to a glass translucency emitting a soft radiant glow to the surrounding space. Consisting of a table lamp, wall light and pendant, each piece in the Original 1227 Mini Ceramic range is finished with chrome plated fittings and grey fabric cables to provide a subtle textural contrast.
