When ill health prevented Henri Matisse from painting in his later years, he produced a prolific body of collage works made from cut shapes of bright gouache paper. For the artist, the colour blue signified both distance and volume. His use of solid fields of single colour inspired several artists, with this group of painters becoming known as the ‘Fauvists’, as they emphasized colour over the realistic values of Impressionism.
