Cromwell Tower is one of three triangular towers of 43 and 44 storeys built as landmarks to the Barbican, designed from 1955 onwards to return a residential population to the City. Oliver Cromwell was married in nearby St Giles, Cripplegate. The boat-like balconies were designed for wind resistance and the pick-hammered concrete surfaces responded to the monumental external load-bearing structure.
