[ IN CONVERSATION WITH Monica Armani ]

Find out more about Monica’s design inspiration and creative journey below.

What was the original inspiration or starting point for Méris?

“The starting point was the movement of the sea. I didn’t want to represent a wave literally, but rather to translate its fluidity into a continuous, enveloping gesture. This is where the soft curves, generous volumes and the uninterrupted line connecting the backrest and armrests come from. I wanted to create a collection with a distinctive presence in the space, one that invites you to let yourself go with the same natural ease as being embraced by the sea.”

The name Méris has a distinctive quality, what does it mean to you was it chosen for the collection?

“The name Méris comes from mer, the French word for sea. I liked it because it captures this reference without describing it explicitly. It is a short, fluid name, with a soft yet precise sound, almost musical. To me, it evokes the calm of the sea’s surface and the energy of its deeper currents. It leaves room for the imagination and retains something mysterious: it suggests an open horizon, a sense of freedom, and something intimate, connected to the memories each of us carries within us. It is a natural synthesis of the collection’s identity.”

What elements make a Monica Armani design?

“I believe it is the balance between rigour and sensitivity. It is never a single detail that defines one of my projects, but rather the way all the details relate to one another. Precision is always combined with a more emotional and sensory dimension. In Méris, this can be seen in the continuity of the profile, in the stitching that follows the curves, and in the precise proportions that make a generous volume feel natural.

It is a simplicity that requires a great deal of work: nothing is decorative, nothing is accidental. This is my way of designing: searching for a clear and refined form, capable of becoming part of people’s lives and continuing to evoke emotion over time.”

When you imagine this sofa in someone’s home, how do you hope it makes them feel?

“For me, well-being, beauty, and functionality are inseparable. People are always at the centre.

When a space truly welcomes us, when it reflects who we are, it becomes home in the fullest sense of the word. I hope Méris can convey exactly this: a sense of harmony, balance, and refuge — an object that delights the soul and makes one long to return home.

I firmly believe that thoughtful design can enhance the quality of our daily lives. Surrounding ourselves with beautiful, well-designed objects is, ultimately, an act of care toward ourselves.

And when I imagine Méris in a lived-in space, I like to think of it as the silent protagonist of many moments — the simple ones, the important ones, the ones that remain.”
