    It depends on the velvet. Performance velvets (treated cotton or polyester blends) handle daily seating use and the occasional bed-out without showing wear. Pure cotton velvet shows pressure marks and pet hair more readily and is better suited to households without small children or pets. Always confirm the velvet specification before ordering for a busy room.

    Mattress quality is independent of upholstery fabric – choose the sofa bed for the mattress system first (pocket-sprung, foam, or fold-out), then choose velvet as the upholstery if it suits the room. Pocket-sprung mattresses come closest to a real bed; foam fold-out mattresses are firmer but suit shorter stays.

    Vacuum weekly with a soft brush attachment to keep the pile lifted. Spot-clean spills immediately with a clean, slightly damp cloth – never rub, which crushes the pile. Use a velvet brush (a soft-bristle clothing brush) to refresh the pile direction and revive the surface look. Avoid placing velvet sofas in direct sunlight, which fades the colour over years.
