    Anything under around 140cm wide sits in the small category. Below 100cm you're closer to a credenza or compact cabinet. Height matters as much as width – a tall, narrow sideboard often holds more than a wide, low one and leaves the wall above free for art or a mirror.

    In a dining room, table linen, candles and seasonal glassware are the natural fit. In a living room, remote controls, board games and cables disappear behind doors. In a hallway, it takes keys, post, a basket for shoes and a small lamp on top. Plan the interior fittings around what you actually own.

    Closed doors win in rooms where the sideboard is in constant view – they hide clutter and keep the silhouette calm.
