Side plates are the small unsung pieces that turn a place setting from utilitarian to considered – somewhere for bread, butter, a starter, a cheese course.     15-20cm diameter is the standard side plate range – smaller than a starter plate (typically 22-25cm) and substantially smaller than a dinner plate (26-30cm). The size suits bread, butter, a small starter or cheese, and reads as a deliberate piece of the place setting rather than as an oversized coaster.

    Tonally yes; identically not necessarily. A matched set guarantees consistent dye-lot and weave; mixing tonally related pieces from different ranges reads as more layered. Some households buy plain side plates that match nothing and use them as a flexible neutral piece across multiple dinner settings. Both approaches are valid.

    Six is the practical minimum for households that host; eight covers a serious dinner-party household. Always order at least two more side plates than dinner plates – they tend to break first because they're handled more (passed across the table for bread and butter, used on side tables for evening drinks).

    Most contemporary porcelain and stoneware side plates are dishwasher-safe on a normal cycle. Pieces with metallic detailing (gold rims, platinum bands) should be hand-washed to preserve the metal. Fine bone china and hand-painted side plates from artisanal makers should always be hand-washed regardless of dishwasher claims.
