Start by pulling one or two tones from your existing upholstery or curtains and find a rug that echoes those shades. Busy patterns work best paired with plain sofas, while muted geometrics can lift a room of solid furniture. Take a swatch home to test against your palette.

As a rule, the rug should sit underneath the front legs of every seat in the room, anchoring the layout. For open-plan spaces, go larger so the full sofa and at least one armchair sit on the rug. Leave 30–60cm of floor showing between the rug's edge and the wall.

Pattern rugs are often more forgiving than plain ones because the design disguises everyday wear and small spills. Vacuum weekly on a low setting and blot any spills immediately with a clean cloth. For deeper cleans, follow the care label or book a professional service once a year.

Oversized geometrics, abstract brushstrokes and tonal block patterns read as modern without feeling cold. Smaller repeat patterns in muted colours anchor a room without competing with the furniture. Avoid heavily traditional borders if you want the room to feel contemporary.
