    A statement mirror earns its place over a fireplace, above a console in the hallway, or opposite a window where it doubles the light. Hanging at eye level, roughly 145 to 150cm from floor to the mirror's centre, keeps the proportions right in most rooms and avoids the tilted-head feeling.

    As a working rule, a wall mirror wants to be around two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the piece of furniture beneath it, whether that's a console or a mantelpiece. For a standalone wall, the mirror should feel generous in relation to the wall it sits on, not floating lost in the middle.

    Mirrors enlarge a room by bouncing daylight deeper into the space and doubling architectural features like a window reveal or a mantel. Positioning one perpendicular to a window, rather than directly opposite it, diffuses light more gently and avoids the cold reflection-facing-reflection look.

    Brushed brass and blackened steel frames pair well with warm palettes and timber furniture, while polished chrome and white oak suit cooler, more minimal rooms. Frameless mirrors with a soft bevel feel architectural without adding another material to the room's mix.

Paired with warm lighting and delicate curtains, your home will be feeling brighter in no time at all. The illusion of space When positioned well, mirrors can be used to open up a room and as such make it feel larger and create the illusion of space. By affixing a large mirror above the mantelpiece or sofa you can elongate the room and make it seem larger than it is on paper. It also lends an opulent finish to the room. One of our favourite ways to style decorative mirrors is to arrange different finishes in a cluster on the wall. The added bonus of decorative mirrors is that they also bring light and the illusion of space into a room. What’s the best way to clean a mirror? Smudged fingerprints and specks of dust are less than desirable when it comes to mirrors. Luckily, it’s an easy thing to fix using items you’ll already have in your house. If there are more stubborn marks, start off by tackling them using a cotton pad and some rubbing alcohol. Next, use your glass cleaner of choice and a microfiber cloth to clean the mirror, moving from top to bottom. Modern storage Arik Levy designed this modern interpretation of a toolbox for Vitra in 2010. Vitra accessories for the kids The iconic Eames Elephant almost didn’t make it to our homes. It was an early creation that stemmed from Charles and Ray Eames’ experiments with plywood. In fact, an original prototype designed for a 14-year-old Lucia Eames remains in the possession of the Eames family today. Unfortunately, due to its tight curves and shape, it was too technically challenging to enter serial production. It wasn’t until 2007 that Vitra was able to bring it to life using modern technology. Right on time Over seventy years ago, George Nelson designed a clock collection that remains remarkably current today. His designs stemmed from an analysis of how people read clocks and the conclusion that numbers are unnecessary.
