Mid-Century Sofas

Mid-century sofas are characterised by clean lines, generous proportions and exposed timber detailing – the design language of the 1950s and 60s reinterpreted for contemporary homes. Our collection pairs classic silhouettes with modern construction, in performance fabrics and full-grain leather built for everyday use rather than display.

Visible timber legs (often splayed or tapered), a relatively low back profile (75-85cm typically), tailored upholstery without skirts, and clean tight cushions rather than feather-stuffed loose ones. The seat is firmer than traditional pillow-back sofas, which gives the silhouette its characteristic discipline.

The firmer seats and lower backs are a different comfort proposition than a deep contemporary sofa. Some people find the ergonomics excellent for short-to-medium sittings (one or two hours) but less ideal for sprawling all-evening film nights. If your living room is family-first, a hybrid that pairs mid-century styling with deeper seats is often the right answer.

Yes – most contemporary mid-century pieces in our collection are offered across the manufacturer's full fabric range, including modern performance fabrics that didn't exist in the original era. A wool blend or treated linen in a period-appropriate tone gives the silhouette an authentic feel with the cleanability of a 21st-century textile.

A well-built piece with a hardwood frame and proper joinery should last 20-25 years. Original 1950s-60s pieces have already exceeded this and many are still in service. The frame and timber components rarely fail; cushioning and fabric are the wearing parts and can be refreshed at year 10-15 to extend the working life by another decade.
