Choose a rug large enough to sit under the front legs of every main seat in the room, which ties the seating group together visually. For larger open-plan rooms, go bigger so the full sofa and armchairs sit on the rug. Leave 30–60cm of floor between the rug edge and the wall.

Wool is the most popular choice for living rooms thanks to its natural durability, stain resistance and softness underfoot. Cotton flatweaves suit modern schemes and are easier to clean at home, while hand-knotted silk adds luxury to formal rooms. Match the material to daily traffic levels.

Vacuum living room rugs weekly on a low setting, rotating the rug every six months to even out wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean cloth and mild water, and book a professional clean every two to three years. Avoid domestic steam cleaners on hand-knotted rugs.

Layering rugs adds texture and scale, particularly when a smaller patterned rug sits on top of a larger neutral flatweave or sisal base. The base rug should be noticeably larger so the top rug reads as intentional. Keep the colour palettes tonally related for a calm effect.
