Lampshades

Our lampshade collection spans linen drum shades, woven natural fibres, rice paper and sculptural glass, each designed for use with a pendant, table lamp or floor lamp to shape the light it casts. Chosen for quality materials that age beautifully and timeless silhouettes that suit both contemporary and traditional interiors, each shade refreshes a room without rewiring it.

A general guide is a shade around two-thirds the height of the base and slightly wider than the widest point. For a floor lamp, the shade width should be close to the base width so the silhouette stays balanced. Shapes matter too: a rounded base pairs happily with a drum, while an angular base takes a conical shade.

Drum shades cast a soft, even light upwards and downwards, suiting living-room lamps and pendants. Empire shades taper inward at the top and concentrate light downward, which works well beside a reading chair. Cones and bell shapes sit somewhere between, adding a more decorative, traditional note to a room.

Swapping a lampshade is one of the quickest ways to shift a room's character without committing to a new lamp. Check the fitting first: British bases usually take a UK ring fitting, while some designer lamps use E14 or E27 bulb-supported shades, and matching the fitting keeps the swap a five-minute job.

A soft dust-brush or a clean lint roller picks up surface dust without stressing the pleats or seams. For deeper marks, gently dab with a barely-damp microfibre cloth and a touch of wool-wash, then let the shade air-dry upright. Avoid submerging paper or silk shades, as both lose their tension when fully wet.
