Isamu Noguchi

Isamu Noguchi's furniture and lighting have defined mid-century sculptural design for over 70 years, the Coffee Table's biomorphic glass top, the Akari paper lanterns, the Cyclone table. Every piece carried at Heal's is produced under licence by Vitra or Ozeki, the two houses Noguchi authorised to continue production.

Designed in 1944 and produced continuously by Vitra (and originally Herman Miller), the Coffee Table pairs a biomorphic plate-glass top with two interlocking timber legs. It is one of the most widely published furniture designs of the 20th century and remains in Vitra's permanent catalogue.

Akari are Noguchi's paper-and-bamboo lanterns, designed between 1951 and his death in 1988 and still produced by hand in Gifu, Japan, by Ozeki & Co. The name translates as both 'light' and 'lightness', which captures the design perfectly.

The Akari lamps are hand-constructed in Japan, one at a time, by the same workshop Noguchi originally appointed. The Coffee Table and Cyclone table are machined, but the original specifications are preserved by Vitra and the surfaces hand-finished.

Dust gently with a soft brush rather than a cloth, which can catch on the paper. Akari should not be placed in direct sunlight for long periods, and any replacement bulbs must be the low-wattage LED or CFL the design was updated to support.
