    A three-seater sofa reads best with three to five cushions: one in each corner plus a central lumbar or pair of smaller accents. A two-seater suits two or three. Any more than five on a three-seater starts to crowd the seating area, so the rule is to start with fewer and only add if the sofa still feels underdressed.

    Matched cushion sets read a little showroom, so the stronger look uses a curated mix: one larger neutral cushion, one patterned cushion, and one textured cushion (velvet, boucle, or fringed). Share one tone across the three so they read as a grouping, rather than matching two dimensions exactly. Odd numbers usually look more considered than even.

    Standard sofa cushions measure 45 to 55cm square, with lumbar cushions running 30 by 50cm for the classic long rectangle. Larger 60cm cushions work on deeper sofas (seat depth over 100cm), where a 45cm cushion looks undersized. Mix the sizes within a single sofa for a more collected feel.
