    Hallway walls and the backs of sofas are the two most natural homes for a console table. A third position is beneath a tall mirror in a dressing room or bedroom, where the table becomes a grooming surface without the visual weight of a full vanity. The key is a wall that needs a horizontal line at hip height.

    A console table sits at 25 to 40cm deep, slim enough to pass behind a sofa without blocking the back cushions or eating into a hallway footprint. Anything deeper reads as a sideboard rather than a console. For hallways narrower than 1.2m, stick to the 25cm end of the range to leave a comfortable walkway past the table.

    Standard console tables sit at 75 to 80cm, matching the height of most sofas so the pair reads as a single composition. Hallway consoles run slightly taller at 80 to 90cm, giving comfortable drop-off height for keys and bags without stooping. A table higher than 95cm starts to feel like a bar counter rather than an occasional surface.

    A console table can work as a light-duty desk for laptop use, provided the depth is at least 35cm and the knee clearance underneath is 60cm or more. Full working-day use is more comfortable on a proper desk with 60 to 70cm depth, but a console set up as an occasional desk is a good fit for a hallway home-office moment.
