    Ceiling height sets the starting point: under 2.4m suits a flush or semi-flush fitting; 2.4 to 3m opens up pendants and chandeliers; above 3m can carry clusters and long-drop statement pieces. Function comes next: a dining table wants focused light, while a living room benefits from an ambient layer paired with table lamps.

    Most rooms benefit from a ceiling fitting as a first layer, with side lighting like table lamps, floor lamps and wall lights supplying the second. Some rooms, like a cosy reading snug or a bedroom where you prefer softer mood lighting, work beautifully with no ceiling light at all and instead rely on carefully-placed side lamps.
