    Stoneware, glazed ceramic, solid brass with a sealed finish, and stainless steel all handle humidity without corroding or staining. Avoid raw timber, untreated mild steel and porous stone in steamy areas. Heavily lacquered timber can work for vanity tops but needs annual sealing in a frequently used family bathroom.

    Wall-hung pieces – open shelves, narrow ladder rails, slim cabinets above the loo – free up floor space and stop the room reading busy at eye level. A single laundry basket beats a row of stacked baskets, and one closed cabinet for medicines and cosmetics keeps the visible surfaces calm.

    Turkish cotton between 550 and 650 grams per square metre is the daily-use sweet spot – heavy enough to feel substantial, light enough to dry between uses. Spa-weight towels at 700-800 gsm feel luxurious but take longer to dry, which can be a problem in a small or unventilated bathroom.

    Most are. The materials hold up better than cheaper alternatives, and the finishes are usually chosen to age with marks rather than show every scratch. The exception is unsealed brass, which oxidises quickly with regular splash exposure – fine if you like the look, less so if you want it to stay polished.

Vitra accessories for the kids The iconic Eames Elephant almost didn’t make it to our homes. It was an early creation that stemmed from Charles and Ray Eames’ experiments with plywood. In fact, an original prototype designed for a 14-year-old Lucia Eames remains in the possession of the Eames family today. Unfortunately, due to its tight curves and shape, it was too technically challenging to enter serial production. It wasn’t until 2007 that Vitra was able to bring it to life using modern technology. Right on time Over seventy years ago, George Nelson designed a clock collection that remains remarkably current today. His designs stemmed from an analysis of how people read clocks and the conclusion that numbers are unnecessary. As such, each piece in the collection shares one common feature – the absence of numbers. The collection is incredibly varied, with wall clocks, built-in clocks and portable table clocks taking centre stage in the Vitra accessories collection. Their bold shapes and unique approach to colour offer a refreshing alternative to more traditional clocks. Storage statements Husband and wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames designed the Hang It All Coat Hook to encourage children to tidy up. The colourful balls that make the design so distinctive offer a playful alternative to traditional hooks. In 2012, Vitra released three new colourways to coincide with what would have been Ray Eames’ 100th birthday. Vitra collaborated with the Eames Office to select the red, green and white colour palettes. Vitra accessories with a design twist Created by design duo Raw-Edges, these Herringbone Cushions are a newer addition to the Vitra accessories collection. The cushions were originally designed for the VitraHaus in Weil am Rhein. When the Vitra team saw how much everyone loved them, they decided to add them to their collection. A technique called immersion dying inspired the cushion's motif. This involves dipping fabric into a dye bath at various intervals to create a striking ombré effect.

On the 14th June every year, bath lovers across the world come together to celebrate International Bath Day. Originally, International Bath Day was created to celebrate the Greek Scientist and Mathematician Archimedes. It’s said that the day marks the anniversary of Archimedes’ discovery that an object’s volume can be determined by immersing it in water.
