Bedroom Rugs

A rug in the bedroom softens the first and last steps of the day, adding warmth underfoot and a quiet layer of texture beneath the bed. Our bedroom rugs range across wool, cotton, jute and sheepskin, in sizes scaled for placement under the full footprint of the bed or beside it. Plain and patterned options suit every scheme.

For a king-size bed, a rug roughly 240 x 300cm placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed gives soft landings on both sides and at the foot. Smaller rooms can use two runners along each side instead. The rug should extend at least 45cm beyond the bed edges to feel properly anchored.

Wool is the classic choice for warmth, softness and durability, and it ages well. Sheepskin and shaggy piles feel indulgent underfoot but need more careful cleaning. Cotton and jute suit lighter, cooler schemes, while a flatweave is the easiest to vacuum if you have a low-profile bedframe.

Rugs and bedding don't need to match, but their tones should relate so the room reads as one scheme. Picking out an accent colour from the bedding in the rug's pattern is a subtle way to tie the two together. Plain rugs give the most flexibility when you change bedding seasonally.

A non-slip underlay secures the rug to the floor and adds extra cushioning, which is especially welcome in bare-footed spaces. Heavier wool rugs with a dense backing often stay put on their own. Vacuum around the edges regularly, as trapped dust can reduce the grip of an underlay over time.
