Dining Benches

A dining bench is the social piece in a dining room – more people fit, conversation flows differently, and it gives the table a more relaxed read than four matched chairs. Our modern dining bench collection covers solid timber, upholstered and steel-frame designs, in lengths to suit four-, six- and eight-seater tables.

A 140cm bench seats two adults comfortably, three at a squeeze. A 180cm bench seats three adults with room to spare; four if some are children. As a rule of thumb, allow 60cm of bench length per adult – the same allowance you'd give for individual chairs.

Bench on one side with chairs on the other is the most popular configuration – it lets the chair side handle the formal end of the table (heads of household, dinner-party guests) while the bench side stays relaxed for children, friends or larger gatherings. Two benches feel more communal but make seating less flexible.

Padded or upholstered benches with a backrest are as comfortable as chairs over two-hour meals. Backless solid-timber benches work for shorter sittings (an hour or so) but tire most adults during longer meals. If you regularly host long dinners, prioritise a bench with at least a low backrest.

It can, provided the height and depth work. Most dining benches are 45-48cm tall – right for a dining table but a touch high for putting shoes on, where 40-42cm is more comfortable. A shorter dining bench in a hallway also gives you a piece that can be brought back to the dining room when needed.
