Percale is a tighter plain weave that feels crisp and cool, with a matt finish – the classic 'hotel sheet' touch. Sateen is a satin-style weave with more threads on the surface, giving a softer, slightly silky feel and a subtle sheen. Percale suits hot sleepers; sateen suits people who want a softer drape.

Thread count matters up to a point – a 200-300 thread count percale or a 300-400 thread count sateen will outperform most higher numbers, where extra threads usually mean thinner yarns. Quality cotton at the right weave matters more than chasing 1000+ thread counts, which are often marketing-led.

Weekly for the sheets and pillowcases people sleep directly on; every two weeks for duvet covers in normal use; every four to six weeks for additional throws and decorative cushions. Wash on 40 degrees with a non-bio detergent, and dry on a line where possible to extend the life of the fibre.

Brushed cotton (also called flannelette) is warmer in winter and feels softer to small hands; it's the natural choice for children's beds. For year-round use, percale is the more practical answer because it washes hot and dries quickly. Avoid pure white in young children's rooms unless you enjoy laundry.
