Gemma has designed a <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/home-accessories\/soft-furnishings\/cushions.html\">collection of luxury cushions<\/a><\/span> for our Limited Edition series available in store and online.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>What is the inspiration behind the cushion designs?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The patterns on these cushions are derived from a 1986 (<em>the year Gemma was born<\/em>) educational stamp set of Geometric shapes that I got given for Christmas last year and has proved to be a fantastic tool for exploring pattern.<\/p>\n<p>For my Royal College of Art graduate collection \u2018Beyond Woven\u2019 the stamps were the starting point for every design\u2026 I tessellated and merged the individual block shapes to create mock woven visuals that were later translated into digital embroidery and print.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heals.uat.redboxcloud.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gemma3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-121\" src=\"https:\/\/heals.uat.redboxcloud.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gemma3.jpg\" alt=\"Gemma Kay Waggett for Heals\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gemma3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gemma3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Tell us about your design process<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whatever the weather I spend my days collecting visual inspiration \u2013 colours, surfaces and objects.<\/p>\n<p>When I am starting a new project I usually go out and about for a day or two to gather ideas and then hibernate in the studio to process via drawing, painting and collage.<\/p>\n<p>I spend a lot of time looking at and collecting different materials to use as bases for my screen-printed or embroidered outcomes, cotton is my favourite fabric and so I always try to find as many different varieties of this as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The base fabric for the Over and Expand cushion I have used one of my favourite fabrics which is a double sided denim \u2013 I have bought an extra 5 metres of it for \u2018the cupboard\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"copy-paste-block\">\n<div class=\"single_inside_content\">Everyone has a personal reaction to colour, are there any you instinctively avoid?There aren\u2019t any colours I avoid but there is definitely a colour that I am most drawn to and that is navy. In December 2011 I started a pop up shop lifestyle brand called Nothing but Navy \u2013 where everything is navy blue \u2013 it is my favourite colour and I think it is timeless, ageless and genderless. When shopping I am always the person who asks \u2018does this come in navy\u2019 and have a long list of staple items that I regularly choose in navy over any other colour\u2026Although this collection is composed of varying shades of blue and navy is my favourite colour to wear I very much enjoy using colour in my work.<\/div>\n<div class=\"single_inside_content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heals.uat.redboxcloud.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gemma2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-123\" src=\"https:\/\/heals.uat.redboxcloud.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gemma2.jpg\" alt=\"Gemma Kay Waggett screen printing studio\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gemma2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/gemma2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>How did you get involved with the Limited Edition series at Heal\u2019s?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Caroline Dulko (Buyer at Heal\u2019s) and I actually did our BA HONS together in Textile Design at Central Saint Martins from 2006-2009 \u2013 I came into Heal\u2019s HQ to show her my work after I graduated from the RCA and she told me about the series and it all went from there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"copy-paste-block\">\n<p><em>Tell us about the first textile you designed<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have been sewing since I was a child but at my secondary school in Design and Technology \u2013 Textiles I first learnt how to use a sewing machine and about different types of fabric and textile techniques\u2026. for my very first project at the school I made a bright purple flower shaped cushion with appliqued felt cut out people on it \u2013 I think it took me a whole term to make!<\/p>\n<p><em>Do you have a design hero that influences your work?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Arguably an artist rather than a designer I absolutely love the work of Gary Hume.
