{"id":7608,"date":"2017-11-29T11:42:50","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T11:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/?p=7608"},"modified":"2017-11-29T11:46:46","modified_gmt":"2017-11-29T11:46:46","slug":"modigliani-mansard-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/modigliani-mansard-gallery\/","title":{"rendered":"Modigliani and The Mansard Gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7621\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_artist.jpg\" alt=\"modigliani_artist\" width=\"1000\" height=\"761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_artist.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_artist-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_artist-768x584.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A new and exciting exhibition has come to London. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/whats-on\/tate-modern\/exhibition\/modigliani\" target=\"_blank\">The Tate Modern<\/a><\/span><\/span> is staging the largest UK retrospective of Amedeo Modigliani\u2019s work \u2013 one hundred portraits, including some of his best, painted over the 14 years that Modigliani lived in Paris.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Known for his pictorial style and elongated forms, it comes as a surprise that Modigliani met little success in his brief 35 years. Born in Italy, he packed up his easel and moved to Paris in 1906 and settled in Le Bateau-Lavoir, a\u00a0commune\u00a0for penniless artists in\u00a0Montmartre. He transformed himself from a dapper academician artist into a sort of prince of vagabonds, his distaste for his own bourgeois upbringing growing with every passing day.<\/p>\n<p>He suffered from poor health throughout his short life, which was often exacerbated by his self-destructive habits, and when he died from tuberculosis in 1920 at the age of 35, his art had never found financial success. He only ever had one solo show as an artist which was closed down by the police and labelled as &#8216;obscene&#8217;. His nudes were too shocking and controversial for audiences of the time.<\/p>\n<p>Skip ahead a few decades and the story is much different.\u00a0Described as emotionally intense and seductive, his nudes are among the best-loved paintings of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century. In 2015 one of his nude paintings, <em>Nu Couche, <\/em>which depicts a reclining naked woman, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/art\/art-news\/11985399\/Modiglianis-Nu-Couche-sold-for-record-113-million.html\" target=\"_blank\">sold for $170.4 million.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7616 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_nu_couche.jpg\" alt=\"modigliani_nu_couche\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_nu_couche.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_nu_couche-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_nu_couche-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/modigliani_nu_couche-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Nu Couche, painted in 1917-1918, sold for $170.4 million in 2015\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>What is lesser known is that that Modigliani actually made his UK debut at the Heal\u2019s Tottenham Court Road store in 1919.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Ambrose Heal, the then chairman of the business, had a true passion for art, design and retail. It led him to open Heal\u2019s very own art gallery \u2013 known as <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/the-mansard-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>The Mansard Gallery<\/u><\/a><\/span> \u2013 on the fourth floor of the building in 1917. Having socialised within artistic circles for many years, Ambrose was able to use his connections to bring some of the world\u2019s best artists to his space.<\/p>\n<p>In 1919, writer and poet Sacheverell Sitwell curated the Exhibition of Modern French Art. Held at The Mansard Gallery, it brought the likes to Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and, of course, Amedeo Modigliani to the British public for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>We still have record of the poster advertising the exhibition. Designed by William Roberts, the composition sees a group of stylised figures viewed from a high perspective set against a yellow background.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7612 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Heals_may119894_2100x1574_300_RGB-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Heals_may119894_2100x1574_300_RGB (1)\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Heals_may119894_2100x1574_300_RGB-1-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Heals_may119894_2100x1574_300_RGB-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Heals_may119894_2100x1574_300_RGB-1-1-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Heals_may119894_2100x1574_300_RGB-1-1-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The poster advertising The Exhibition of French Art at the Mansard Gallery<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Modigliani displayed Le Petit Paysan (The Little Peasant), a painting that is said to largely have been influenced by the later works of Cezanne where country workers posed centrally in the canvas and painted predominantly in blue\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/learn\/online-resources\/glossary\/t\/tone\" data-gtm-destination=\"article-page\" data-gtm-name=\"body_text_link\">tones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his preface to the exhibition\u2019s catalogue, writer Arnold Bennett described the exhibition as \u2018the first of its kind since the war, and the best of its kind since the celebrated exhibition at the Grafton Galleries many years ago.\u201d The exhibition was widely praised by modernist critics such as Roger Fry who, upon seeing the show, commented \u2018what innumerable different version, one can enjoy in this gallery!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7614 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The_little_peasant_modigliani.jpg\" alt=\"The Little Peasant c.1918 Amedeo Modigliani 1884-1920 Presented by Miss Jenny Blaker in memory of Hugh Blaker 1941 http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/work\/N05269\" width=\"980\" height=\"1536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The_little_peasant_modigliani.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The_little_peasant_modigliani-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The_little_peasant_modigliani-768x1204.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The_little_peasant_modigliani-653x1024.jpg 653w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Le Petit Paysan (The Little Peasant) painted in 1918<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Others were less impressed by the new style of paintings on show. Literary giant Evelyn Waugh later referred to the daring modern forms in his 1939 short story <em>Work Suspended <\/em>as \u2018those vague assemblages of picnic litter which used to cover the walls of the Mansard Gallery in the early twenties.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Despite the criticism, Modigliani has become one of the most cherished artists of the modernist movement. Ambrose\u2019s championing of the struggling artist reinforces what has come to be synonymous with the beloved\u00a0 chairman &#8211; that he really was ahead of his time in every aspect of his life.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/whats-on\/tate-modern\/exhibition\/modigliani\" target=\"_blank\">Modigliani <\/a><\/span>is on at the Tate Modern until 2nd April 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; A new and exciting exhibition has come to London.
