Not so much an interior trend as a way of life, Hygge has invaded British interiors this season with its blend of cosy comforts and Scandi style. So who better to turn to for a masterclass in all things hyggelig than the author of The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What\u2019s Hygge?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Hygge, or ‘hue-ugh’ as it\u2019s properly pronounced, originates from the Norwegian word for \u2018well-being\u2019 and is an intrinsic part of Danish culture in the colder months (and boy does it get cold up there).<\/p>\n

As Meik remarks, \u2018Hygge is the antidote to the cold winter, the rainy days and the duvet of darkness\u2019 and seeing as Denmark is regularly voted \u2018the happiest nation in Europe\u2019 it\u2019s probably time we Brits started to take note.<\/p>\n

Turn down the lights<\/span><\/h3>\n

With the days getting shorter, it can be tempting to illuminate every inch of your home. Yet the Danes take a different approach by turning the lights down low. Hit the \u2018Hygge sweetspot\u2019 with candles and lower temperature lighting<\/a><\/span> designs, such as filament bulbs<\/a><\/span> or diffused lamps<\/a><\/span> to \u2018create soothing pools of light\u2019.<\/p>\n

Danes burn more candles<\/a><\/span> per person than anywhere else in Europe, so bring them out in force! Alternatively, Meik suggests to \u2018use several smaller contemporary lamps<\/a><\/span> around the room to create a more hyggeligt light than one big lamp set in the ceiling.\u2019<\/p>\n

Feather the nest<\/span><\/h3>\n

Roughly translated as a \u2018nook\u2019, no Hygge home is complete without a hyggekrog. This is the space where you snuggle up in the evening after a cold commute home or relax on a lazy Sunday.<\/p>\n

Cushions<\/a><\/span>, throws<\/a><\/span> and furs<\/a><\/span> are the building blocks for a homely hyggekrog with bay windows providing the perfect place to create your refuge. That isn\u2019t to say you can\u2019t add a bit of hyggelig to your sofa<\/a><\/span> \u2013 after all what better place to lay back and watch the latest Scandi TV series.<\/p>\n

Bring the outside in<\/span><\/h3>\n

From rugged and rustic furniture to handcrafted accessories, Hygge is all about embracing the beautiful forests and scenery that are intrinsically linked to Scandinavian design.<\/p>\n

Yet why stop at furnishings? As Meik comments, \u2018Any piece of nature you might find is likely to get the hygge greenlight\u2019 with foliage used for decoration on a table top while furs<\/a><\/span> provide a textural element to a bed, chair or even the floor.<\/p>\n

Say it with ceramics<\/span><\/h3>\n

The curve on a vase<\/a><\/span>, the spout of a teapot<\/a><\/span> or even the simple pleasure of a warm mug<\/a><\/span> of coffee in your hands, the Danes excel at turning ceramic homewares<\/a><\/span> into an art form. When creating your Hygge home, you can\u2019t go wrong with iconic Scandi ceramics from K\u00e4hler<\/a><\/span> and Marimekko<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n
