Also known as the Saarinen Table as well as the Pedestal Table, this iconic design is beloved across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read on to find out everything what you need to know about the iconic Tulip Table and the brains behind it, Eero Saarinen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BEHIND THE DESIGN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It took Eero Saarinen five years to design a table that reached his meticulous standards of perfection. His self-imposed brief was to challenge the norm by creating tables and chairs with simple bases. In this way he hoped to eliminate what he saw as \u201cthe slum of legs\u201d often found under tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<link rel=\"stylesheet\" type=\"text\/css\" href=\"\/\/c.zmags.com\/static\/styles.css\" \/><div class=\"zmags-viewer-container\" data-experience=\"5e2af24afaf7ea56196bf0ef\"><\/div><script defer type=\"text\/javascript\"  src=\"\/\/c.zmags.com\/static\/manifest.js\"><\/script><script defer type=\"text\/javascript\"  src=\"\/\/c.zmags.com\/static\/vendor.js\"><\/script><script defer type=\"text\/javascript\"  src=\"\/\/c.zmags.com\/static\/client.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The result was a gently sweeping central base that served as the table\u2019s only leg. When paired with coordinating <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/tulip-armless-chair-swivel-base.html\">Tulip Chairs<\/a><\/strong>, the table provides the perfect antithesis to the typical clutter found under chairs and tables. It is this simple silhouette that makes it one of the most forward-thinking <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/blog\/mid-century-design\/\">mid-century<\/a><\/strong> designs around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon release the collection, including the table, was an instant success. Knoll has exclusively crafted the table since its unveiling in 1959. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HOW IT&#8217;S MADE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1950s was a time of great\ntechnical advancement and paved the way for designs like the Tulip Table. Its\ngently sweeping base is crafted using aluminium with a minimalist black or\nwhite finish. Knoll\u2019s logo and Eero Saarinen&#8217;s signature are the base\u2019s only ornamentation\nas marks of authenticity and quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the years Saarinen\u2019s Tulip Table has featured many exclusive finishes and limited-edition designs. The design most famously boasts a white marble table top with a bevelled edge. However, it is also often found in different marble, wood and laminate finishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<link rel=\"stylesheet\" type=\"text\/css\" href=\"\/\/c.zmags.com\/static\/styles.css\" \/><div class=\"zmags-viewer-container\" data-experience=\"5e2af24ffaf7ea56196bf120\"><\/div><script defer type=\"text\/javascript\"  src=\"\/\/c.zmags.com\/static\/manifest.js\"><\/script><script defer type=\"text\/javascript\"  src=\"\/\/c.zmags.com\/static\/vendor.js\"><\/script><script defer type=\"text\/javascript\"  src=\"\/\/c.zmags.com\/static\/client.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABOUT THE DESIGNER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The son of esteemed Finnish architect, Eliel Saarinen, and Loja Saarinen, an accomplished artist, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/designer\/eero-saarinen.html\">Eero Saarinen <\/a><\/strong>grew up exploring his creativity. He spent his youth at his father\u2019s architecture studio in Finland until the family immigrated to the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His design career began studying\nat the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the school his father designed the campus for and\nwould later become head of. It was here that Saarinen became friends with\nfuture design icons Charles Eames, Ray Kaiser, and Florence Knoll (n\u00e9e Schust).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\" style=\"border-color:#ff6900\"><blockquote class=\"has-text-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\"><p>&#8220;Our architecture is too humble. It should be proud, more aggressive, much richer and larger than we see today. I would like to do my part in expanding that richness.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Eero Saarinen<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saarinen went on to study in Paris\u2019\nAcad\u00e9mie de la Grande Chaumi\u00e8re and the Yale School of Architecture before\nreturning to Cranbrook to teach. It was in 1940 that his furniture design career\ntook off, when he and Charles Eames entered a MoMA competition. Together the\nduo designed the now-famous Organic Chair and skyrocketed Saarinen into the\npublic eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next 15 years Saarinen\ndesigned countless pieces of furniture, many of which are now considered design\nclassics. He took a sculptural approach to design and was meticulous about\nfinding the right curve and silhouette for each piece. His experiments in\nmaterials and discovery of new aesthetics helped to pave the way for many\ndesign greats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today his work is displayed with pride across the globe. His work is featured in collections at the MoMA in New York, Milwaukee Art Center and Design and London\u2019s V&amp;A Museum. Huge sums often await vintage Saarinen pieces that come up for sale as they are highly collectable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a
