Characterised by clean, streamlined design, it&#8217;s had a lasting and widespread impact on everything from architecture to furniture design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heal&#8217;s was one of the first retailers to introduce Bauhaus to the UK under the guidance to of Ambrose Heal. In this blog, we\u2019re taking a look back at our close ties with the Bauhaus and its influence on design today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What was the Bauhaus?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bauhaus was a German art school established by Walter\nGropius in 1919. His vision was to bridge the gap between art and industry by\ncombining architecture, sculpture, and painting into a single creative\nexpression. Prior to his way of thinking, architecture and design were\nheld in higher esteem that craftsmanship and production, but Gropius wanted to reimagine\nthe material world to reflect the unity of all the arts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its slogan, \u201cArt into Industry\u201d, highlights the key concepts of Bauhaus design \u2013 functional and simple designs that have been stripped down to their basic elements making them suited to mass production. Teachers and students from the Bauhaus school designed some of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century\u2019s most iconic pieces of furniture, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/barcelona-relax-chair-venezia-cognac-leather.html\"><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 102, 0);\">Barcelona<\/span><\/a>, Wassily, and Brno chairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heal\u2019s and the Bauhaus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bauhaus spearheaded a wave of experimental design that\nswept across northern Europe throughout the following decade. Meanwhile, in the\nUK, many homes were stuck in the Edwardian and Victorian era with highly\ndecorative furnishings and heavy wallpapers and colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, ever the innovator, Ambrose Heal was determined to bring this new wave of international style to the UK and was one of the first retailers to do so. Presented for the first time in this country, at Heal&#8217;s.<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That isn\u2019t to say this new modernist style of furniture was an instant hit with UK audiences. There was an enormous hostility in Britain to the Bauhaus.<em> <\/em>Frank Pick, the famous design director of London Transport, once said, \u201cLet us leave the continent to pursue their own tricks and go our own way traditionally,&#8221; when discussing the design of the British Pavilion at the Paris Expo of 1937.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, with each exhibition Heal\u2019s spirit of innovation became more emboldened. In the midst of the Great Depression, Ambrose continued to champion the economy and efficiency of industrially styled furniture. He invested in nationwide promotional campaigns that championed \u2018economy furniture\u2019, one of which was \u2018Economy with a Difference at Heal\u2019s 1933\u2019 which took a clear step in the Bauhaus direction. They\nwere the place to go for Arts &amp; Crafts but they also embraced Modernism and\nquite a stark modernism early on in the late 1920s and early 1930s with black\ngloss paint and tubular steel, which wasn\u2019t to everyone\u2019s taste at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The taste for modernist furniture had well and truly been established at Heal&#8217;s and, in many ways, the store became a showcase for the movement. Yet the movement continued to influence designers for generations to come including some of the most recognised names today &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/brand\/tom-dixon.html\"><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 102, 0);\">Tom Dixon<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/designer\/matthew-hilton.html\"><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 102, 0);\">Matthew Hilton<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heals.com\/designer\/philippe-starck.html\"><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 102, 0);\">Philippe Starck<\/span><\/a>&#8216;s work all reference elements of the distinctive Bauhaus style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heal&#8217;s played an important part in the introduction of the Bauhaus to Britain, cementing its place in the design movement&#8217;s history.
